iOS 27 Brings Video Apps and Smarter Siri AI to Apple CarPlay

Apple's iOS 27 developer beta, released alongside WWDC 2026 announcements, delivers a meaningful upgrade to CarPlay — the biggest since the platform launched. Two changes stand out: video app support and a fundamentally rethought voice assistant.

Siri AI in the Car

Apple is calling its next-generation assistant "Siri AI," and it works differently from the Siri drivers have been dealing with for years. Instead of occupying the full display, it appears as a soft glowing orb near the bottom-center of the screen. More importantly, it can now answer follow-up questions contextually — ask about a restaurant, then ask what time it closes, and Siri understands the reference. Apple says the experience is closer to how ChatGPT or Google Gemini handle conversational queries.

All in-car conversations are synced back to the Siri app on your iPhone, where they're logged with a small car icon for easy identification. Siri AI on CarPlay requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Video Apps, With a Catch

For the first time, developers can build full video applications for CarPlay — not just AirPlay mirroring, but purpose-built apps that let users browse catalogs and content directly on the car's screen. The feature only activates when the vehicle is parked. Automakers also need to opt in, which means the rollout will be uneven across vehicle brands initially.

Visual Refresh

CarPlay picks up the Liquid Glass icon treatment from iOS 27's broader design language, along with new wallpapers matching the updated OS aesthetic. Media apps now include a small persistent MiniPlayer in the top-right corner showing the album art and basic controls. The Now Playing screen also gains a larger, draggable progress slider for audio scrubbing — a small but practical change for podcast listeners.

The iOS 27 developer beta is available now. A public beta is expected in July, with a full release to all compatible iPhones anticipated in September 2026.
